Hero
This composition follows the heroic cycle used in many famous stories, movies, and novels. The hero starts at home and a challenge presents itself. The hero chooses to face that challenge and embarks on a journey into the unknown. Along the way the hero meets various companions who help him or her overcome the various challenges he or she must face. Often the story will come to a climax when the hero must face some great evil. After that, the hero returns home, where everything is the same, but he or she is different.

The Good Fight
A groove-oriented composition in 7/4 with plenty of rhythmic interest and exciting harmonic twists. A minimalist-style intro sets the tone for a catchy melody which is brought to a close by a heroic recurring high note in the brass and electric guitar. After a solo section for electric guitar, the saxes play a rhythmic soli that builds to a climax. The band drops out and a syncopated drum solo vamp reminiscent of “Jazz Crimes” gradually builds into a powerful and exciting shout section. This high energy composition makes a great closer. Performed by the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors at the 2019 Jazz Education Network Young Composers Showcase.

These Foolish Things
My big band arrangement of "These Foolish Things" by Jack Strachey. Woodwind textures set a nice lush stage for the beginning of what is a vivid narrative. After solos and an adventurous saxophone soli, a dramatic shout chorus leads to a sudden dynamic drop. Soprano saxophone solos over a slow build with highly chromatic motion over a pedal point.

The Golden Afternoon

This is my original composition based off of the opening poem to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. This was performed by UNC Jazz Lab Band 1 as a part of their "Electronic Wonderland" project. It starts with a smooth ballad feel and warm major harmony reminiscent of Maria Schneider. After a trombone solo and a “Golden Moment” featuring the brass, the texture changes to a faster rock feel for a soprano solo that symbolizes Alice and her adventurous spirit.

Slippin’ Slide
This trombone feature was selected for the Ithaca College Jazz Composition Competition in 2019. It was performed by Vincent Gardner and the Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble at their jazz festival. It features the trombone throughout, first in a blues-march textured melody. After a trombone solo and shout, the trombone section is featured in a blues-y soli. This gospel/blues chart will get everybody’s toes tappin’.
